Today’s Unrest at the Capitol

Times like today make it more important that ever for our young people at Chicago Scholars to know that we believe in them and their potential as future leaders who will heal our nation in time. What we have all witnessed today has been scary and frustrating, and disappointing for many of us. I am reminded of the words of Theodore Roosevelt, “Order without liberty and liberty without order are equally destructive.” American Democracy has, at its bedrock, the peaceful transition of power. Order and liberty, even in our most difficult times, have coexisted and have been the shining light of what it means to be American all over the globe.

Today, I am sad that the acts of a few have taken complete disregard to one of the best parts of our country. Elections are never easy, especially when polarizing; however, I remain confident in the rules, structure, and safeguards put in place that protect American Democracy. Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish.

The times ahead won’t be easy, but if the last year has taught us nothing else, our country, Chicago and our Chicago Scholars will endure as we always do, together.

From Prince to King (2020)

Respectfully,

Jeffery Beckham Jr.
Interim Chief Executive Officer
